Portrait Drawing with Charcoal
Adults, Beginner to Intermediate
Mondays, June 22 - July 20, 2026
Instructor: Jeff De Lierre
In this class, students will explore the fundamentals of portrait drawing in charcoal. We will focus on capturing likeness, understanding facial structure, and developing strong value relationships. Students will focus on building portraits from large shapes and forms before refining details, as well as using expressive charcoal techniques to create depth, atmosphere, and character.
Students will work in an 18" × 24" format on newsprint paper and will have the opportunity to practice both quick studies and longer, more developed portraits. These exercises are designed to strengthen observation skills, improve accuracy, and build confidence in drawing the human face.
