Rediscovering the artwork exhibited at the 1904 World's Fair

Illustrations of Selected Works in the Various National Sections of the Department of Art

Published by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company, [St. Louis], c1904

This is the original handbook that provided 1904 World's Fair visitors and non-visitors alike with deeper insights into the artworks exhibited in 1904 in the Palace of Fine Arts building; today the building houses the St. Louis Art Museum.

What few physical copies of the book still survive are mainly found in public institutions and private libraries.

The gilding of the debossed letters on the front of the book pay subtle homage to the end of the Gilded Age and entrance into a new century. Although the book has some weight to it, the size would likely have made it very manageable for visitors to carry through the museum.
